My eldest son, Hugo, has spent the past five years at University in London and was back for the summer.

Having not really seen much of him for the past five years, I though it was time we re-connected and therefore suggested a trip to France to spend some time together.

He suggested we cycle (I had suggested a walking holiday, but that was too sedate) and so we planned a five day route through the countryside and villages of Normandy and Brittany.

The distances were reasonable at between 65-85kms per day and we had superb weather.

We got lost a few times and ended up in woods and fields, places the bikes weren’t designed to go. The new panniers were pretty good and we only had one breakage after a particularly muddy offroad section, that was fixed with a long usb cable!

We also had an hilarious meeting with Michał Kwiatkowski, whom we thought was the famous Sky Team Cyclist. He was signing books etc at the Super U in Combourg and pictures were taken with him. It was only late that we realised that this was another Michal Kwiatkowski, one who doesn’t cycle but sings songs and had won the French equivalent of Britain’s Got Talent!

I can highly recommend this type of trip with the younger generation. They have lots of advice to impart, make the hills look easy and get the ladies interested in your pictures on Instagram!
